WORKING WITH VEGETABLE IVORY
[Phytelephas Macrocarpa]

Our jewellery is hand made with a very special palm seed that has been
used for 200 years in the manufacture of fine products like the buttons of the
Victorian dresses, the draw handles of the fine furniture as well as
Japanese carvings, rare miniatures and sculptures .

The seed is known as Vegetable Ivory because its colour , hardness and
density are very similar to animal ivory and is the only natural and 100
percent sustainable alternative for ivory. But before it can be worked,
the seeds must be allowed to dry naturally to gain the hardness required
to be carved. This drying time can go from 2 to up to 20 years. Consequently,
the older the seed the more valuable it becomes.

We at LEJU use Vegetable Ivory and other tropical seeds to make our own
designs for you to enjoy unique products!
